Federtion Square was Rowan Opat’s final student project in 1997.

This project is an exploration into civic gestures within public space adjoining the city. The programmes are born of the Federation Square, Centre for Moving Image, and Museum for Contemporary Art briefs.

The project concentrated on three urban issues essential to the site.

A strategy for reinforcing the CBD edge along Flinders street, utilizing a change in scale and engaging with historic proposition of the green belt for Melbourne.

A strategy for arranging and servicing the resultant massive flat building type via pattern and lane mimicking medieval streetscape.

A means of providing hierarchy to the project for which I appropriated the history of civic building in park.
